Originally from St. Catherine’s, Ont., Patrick Newman was introduced to rowing at an early age by brothers who were already successful coxswains. Newman began coxing in high school and in 1987 was named to the Canadian national rowing team, going on to cox at two Olympic Games. In 1993 Newman won the World Rowing Championships in the lightweight men’s eight.
While training for the 1996 Olympics in Victoria, B.C., Newman received his level four coaching certificate and went on to coach full time at the Gorge Rowing Centre that same year. At the 2000 Olympic Games Newman coached Canadian single sculler Derek Porter and since then, has coached seasonally for Rowing Canada with his crews winning medals at U-23 and Senior World Rowing Championships as well as medals at the Pan American Games.
VCRC would like to welcome Isolda Penney, the new Director of Adult Rowing. Isolda oversees all the Adult member programs, coaches the Competitive group ,the Open/Active for Life sessions and works with the coach of the Club group. VCRC is a registered not-for-profit society run by a Board of Directors elected by members.
VCRC is run by a Board of Directors, elected by club members. The Board of Directors leads the club towards achieving the Club’s Vision and Mission, providing direction to VCRC staff who are responsible for day-to-day operations. The Board meets monthly and minutes are available to members.
