VCRC rowers earn one gold medal, one silver medal and two bronze medals

Elk Lake, BC The Victoria City Rowing Club is proud to announce that eleven junior and 6 adult club members participated in the 2019 RCA National Rowing Championships and Canada Cup this past weekend in Burnaby, BC. . 

Rowers from all over Canada travelled to BC to show their skills in singles (one-person boat) and pairs (two person boats). Unique to this event is the opportunity for all age categories to race in the same race from junior rowers to Canada’s athletes who are getting ready to race at the 2020 Olympic Games. 

In the Lightweight Women’s single VCRC Alumni Trish Mara did a tremendous job in the final sprint passing Jaclyn Stelmaszyk who finish in the silver medal position and Kate Haber who took home the bronze medal. 

In the Men’s single Graham Peters rower to a bronze medal “After a slow start of the regatta, Graham did a great job and worked his way up to the podium” commented his coach Isolda Penney after the final.

Alex Gonin and Owen Marcovitz captured the gold medal in the Junior pairs “Windy conditions made the first races challenging but Alex and Owen qualified for the quarterfinals and with some extra focus and attention to making the boat move fast they are now crowned National Champions” said their coach Kristjan Joubert following the regatta.

Thirteen VCRC junior athletes qualified to race in the Canada Cup and helped the BC rowing team to win the overall points trophy. The weekend has been a great learning experience with a lot of great racing opportunities.
